April Newsletter - Updates and Cancellations

We hope everyone is staying safe and healthy. This pandemic is an extremely challenging and stressful period for our community, our nation, and the entire world.  Perhaps one of the most important things we can do now to reduce the severity of the coronavirus outbreak and save lives is to Stay at Home except for essential activities.  For the latest official information, see http://www.vdh.virginia.gov/coronavirus/

As such most upcoming Friends of Indian River activities are CANCELLED:
  • Monthly Meeting - Apr 16
  • Adopt-A-Park - Apr 18
We may cancel the May meeting too, but we will formally decide that in May.  Clean the Bay Day in June has also been cancelled.

Meetings about the Indian River Small Area Plan have been deferred, as has the Indian River Park Trails planning meeting.   We'll provide word when these get back on track.

Census 2020

If you haven't yet filled out your Census survey, please do it now.  It only takes about 10 minutes online and it's very important that everyone gets counted. This head count determines our representation in Congress, helps to make sure we get a fair share of funding, and provides vital statistics used for all kinds of analysis and planning.  https://2020census.gov/

City of Chesapeake Election on May 5

The Governor announced this week that he will ask the General Assembly to move the May 5th local elections to November.  But that request needs to be approved by the General Assembly which is scheduled to meet on April 22.  To be on the safe side, in case it is not moved, you can request an Absentee Ballot for the May election.  Due to the COVID-19 outbeak, everyone is eligible for absentee voting. You can request an absentee ballot online or by mail. See https://www.elections.virginia.gov/casting-a-ballot/absentee-voting/ for details.

50th Anniversary of Earth Day

The 50th Anniversary of Earth Day is on Wednesday, April 22nd.  As with most everything else, all the planned events to recognize this milestone have been cancelled.  We have been working with the Chesapeake Environmental Improvement Council on a list of 50 Things You Can Do to help our home world starting on Earth Day.  We'll publish that once it's ready.  To find more digital events recognizing Earth Day, visit https://www.earthday.org/earth-day-2020/
